Realized

While pregnant, I was frustrated with people who comforted us by saying they were "praying for a miracle."  As if an extra chromosome and multiple physical abnormalities could magically disappear.  Despite my faith, this idea seemed naive.  Besides, I'm the mother and all I prayed for was a few minutes with a breathing baby.  After 20 days with Allegra, I now realize we've witnessed several miracles...

(1) After checking in to the hospital the night before my induction (Pitocin was to start around 5:30 a.m.) my body instead went into labor on its own around 2:30 a.m.  Allegra was born before 5 a.m.

(2) During labor, Allegra's heart rate dropped significantly during every contraction.  My midwife explained an epidural would lower my blood pressure, potentially slowing the baby's heart rate as well.  I knew this and my birth plan requested no pain medications.  Weak though, I eventually gave up on natural labor and asked for an epidural.  Allegra was born 4 or 5 contractions later with no time for administration of an epidural.

(3) Only 10 percent of babies with Trisomy 18 survive birth.

(4) Six hours after her birth, we were able to bring Allegra home to be with her family.

(5) 20 days with Allegra so far.  480 hours.  More than a few minutes.

Amazing.  With a breathing Baby Allegra laying on my lap, I am humbled.

  1. She is just beautiful. And she is a miracle. What an amazing family you have. I am so happy that Annie shared this with me so that I could read of your journey with one of Heavenly Father's special angels.

  2. Dear Ali and Mitch, A friend told me a about Allegra. As I read her blog, I am reliving my Maria Rose's first few weeks of life. She too had Trisomy 18. She surprised the Dr.s over and over again. One miracle after another. Enjoy everyday with her as much as possible. Dont fret about the future. We learned to live one day at a time. It can all seem overwhelming otherwise. These little ones are very unpredictalbe as you are already experiencing. Our little girl recently passed away. She was with us 9 months and 4 days. We will all be forever changed for the better because of our little angel. Kiss her sweet little cheeks as much as you can. How I wish I could do that again. These little ones are very special!!!!! Their purpose in life is immense. Your special family was specifically chosen to recieve this little one. God has big plans. Have no worries he will take care of you and bless you for giving her a chance at life. FYI--Our insurance company paid for 16 hours of nursing care a day for Maria. Something definitely worth looking into. We will be praying for you everyday. God Bless. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to talk or would like to here more of Maria's story.

  4. We too are humbled by Angel Allegra's beautiful life and journey. Remember to look at your bracelet everyday and think about what it says. I KNOW she was chosen specifically to come to your home based on the kind of people you all are. You are all superstars in my book!!! Thank you for all the beautiful journal entries and photos we all love reading your blog. It is such a wonderful gift to all who are fortunate enough to visit it. p.s. my kids loved the song and have been singing it around the house :)

  5. Ali, I've been following your blog daily now for weeks. I haven't wanted to be intrusive as I know how sacred and private this is, so have hesitated to write anything. But I just have to make some comments - and your mom told me I could :). I have loved and been so impressed with you since our days in San Antonio. Reading this experience has heightened that love and respect and honor for you and your family. What a gift you've been given to have this extra time with this precious little soul. No doubt your Father in Heaven is keenly aware of you and yes, you've been given lots of miracle.
    Love you - Kris Plummer

  8. Ali, you know that I am not a religious person. But I am in awe of Allegra, of you, of your family. Miracle is definitely the word that comes to mind, and reverent is the feeling that is inspired.

  9. Ali, Allegra is absolutely beautiful in every possible way. I am so happy for you and your family that Allegra continues to fight and stay strong. I know she feels incredibly loved. You are absolutely right that she has already touched so many lives within 24 days of life. She has blessed my life. Thank you for opening up and sharing your journey so that I can be reminded how precious life is, and to take the time to enjoy the moments in life I sometimes let slip by. We are keeping Allegra and your family in our prayers.
Sending you lots of love. Marina
